Jason Miyares Defeats Mark Herring to
Become Virginia’s Attorney General
RICHMOND – Tuesday night, Glenn Youngkin defeated Terry McAuliffe to become governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
In additional top-tier races, Winsome Sears also defeated Hala Ayala to become lieutenant governor and Jason Miyares defeated two-term Mark Herring to become attorney general.
Voters also elected a pro-life majority in the House of Delegates by replacing six pro-abortion incumbents with pro-life candidates.
“We congratulate Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears and Jason Miyares on their impressive victories in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are encouraged that Virginians made their voices heard and rejected the pro-abortion extremism espoused by Terry McAuliffe, Hala Ayala and Mark Herring,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “National
Right to Life reached out to 380,000 pro-life voters across the Commonwealth to remind voters of the clear contrast between the candidates.”
During the campaign, Glenn Youngkin noted his support for pro-life policies like the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from late abortions. He also called for safeguarding taxpayers from being forced to fund abortions.
In contrast, Terry McAuliffe embraced a policy of abortion on demand, which would allow abortions for any reason, through all nine months of pregnancy. McAuliffe also supported the use of taxpayer funds to pay for abortions. He also endorsed the controversial bill sponsored by Delegate Kathy Tran, which would have allowed infants who survive abortions to be denied life-saving medical treatment. McAuliffe called it “common
sense.”
Lieutenant Governor-elect Winsome Sears is pro-life. She opposes abortion on demand, and she supports protection for unborn children and will use her tie-breaking vote in the state senate to stop bills that expand abortion or cancel protective pro-life laws. Winsome Sears also opposes the use of our tax dollars for abortion, and she opposes taxpayer funding of abortion providers.
Attorney General-elect Jason Miyares defeated two-term, pro-abortion Mark Herring. Jason Miyares is pro-life and opposes abortion on demand. He will use his office to defend pro-life laws. As a delegate, Jason Miyares voted against bills that canceled Virginia’s protective laws for unborn babies and their mothers.
AJanuary 2021 Marist pollfound just 15% of Americans support abortion without limits, the position held by McAuliffe. The same poll found significant opposition to taxpayer funding of abortion by a margin of 58% to 38%.
“The pro-life sweep of the top-tier races by Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, and Jason Miyares should be a warning sign for pro-abortion candidates and lawmakers across the country. Embracing a policy of abortion on demand is not just wrong, but a losing campaign position. National Right to Life aims to build on the pro-life momentum initiated in the Virginia Governor’s race, and we look forward to
working with Governor-elect Youngkin and our Virginia state affiliate, the Virginia Society for Human Life, to enact policies that protect the lives of every Virginian,” Tobias added.
