WASHINGTON – Today, National Right to Life (NRLC) mourns the passing of former Senate Majority Leader and presidential candidate Bob Dole who passed away at the age of 98.
“Senator Dole’s service to our country, to the unborn, the elderly, and those with disabilities cannot be overstated,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “During his entire senate career, Senator Dole championed the least vulnerable among us and worked diligently to see pro-life legislation
passed.”
In a December 1995 letter to NRLC Executive Director David N. O’Steen, Ph.D., Senator Dole wrote:
It is my long-held view that Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion on demand, should be overturned. In the past, I have supported a constitutional amendment to achieve this goal, and I continue to support this effort today. I also support a constitutional amendment restricting abortion subject to the widely accepted exceptions of rape, incest and life of
mother.
“Senator Dole was a true pro-life champion! His respect for human life guided him in fighting for the elderly, those with disabilities, and the unborn. In his years of public service, he was able to advance pro-life legislation that empowered and saved countless lives,” said Scott Fischbach, executive director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, the
Minnesota affiliate of National Right to Life.
Fischbach added, “I was with Senator Dole in Iowa and then in Washington D.C., as part of the Senior Staff as Coalitions Director. Crafting, shepherding, and passing pro-life legislation is never an easy job, but Majority Leader Dole was always up to the task and achieved success in the U. S. Senate.”
