COLUMBIA, S.C. (Tuesday, July 5, 2022) Abortions occurring in South Carolina rose from 5,465 in 2020 to 6,279 in 2021 according to the recently published data by the State Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). That means at least 811 more children waiting to be born died in South Carolina abortion facilities last year.

The data also shows that 74 percent of the abortions were chemical abortions in 2021 up from 67 percent in 2020.

The department has not yet published the abortions by race or by facility including the three freestanding abortion businesses located in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston. Planned Parenthood operates the facilities in Columbia and Charleston. The Greenville Women’s Clinic is privately owned.

For reference, the 2020 DHEC data shows the Greenville Women’s Clinic reported 2,274 abortions; Planned Parenthood in Columbia reported 1,681 abortions; and Planned Parenthood in Charleston reported 1,478 abortions. That means the freestanding abortion businesses committed 98 percent of the total 5,468 abortions. The federal government subsidized Planned Parenthood captured 57 percent of the blood bath market in South Carolina, while the private Greenville Women’s Clinic’s share was 41 percent.

 

“We grieve for the loss of our unborn brothers and sisters and we pray for the mothers and families who will never know them or who they would have become,” said South Carolina Citizens for Life President Lisa Van Riper.  “South Carolina Citizens for Life will continue its decades of work to protect innocent human life that is threatened by abortion and premature death by euthanasia.”

Since 1990 the General Assembly has passed 16 life saving laws saving more than 200,000 lives of babies waiting to be born. SCCL is the oldest and largest single-issue pro-life organization in our state.
