We Give Thanks for You!

Dear Friends of Life,

As Paul the apostle ministered and taught, three important people along his second missionary journey became the founders of his first church started in Philippi. They ended up supporting Paul on his third missionary journey in a big way financially, with many bible scholars centuries later calling the church at Philippi a model church due to their strength, health, generosity, and minimal disunity.

When Paul writes to them in Philippians 1:3-6 he says: Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Thank you for being like the early church planters of this church at Philippi. You have been healthy, strong, generous and unified in working alongside us to protect the most vulnerable members of our human family. And we are certain that God, who began the good work within us, will continue His work until it is finished.

You spoke up, when others remained silent. You persevered, when others were apathetic. You gave generously, when others gave nothing.

We thank God for you every time we think of you. Thank you for blessing us with your time, talents, and gifts.

Message from Holly Gatling, Executive Director

South Carolina Citizens for Life, Inc., was incorporated in 1974, the year after the U.S. Supreme Court enacted the lethal Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton decisions that, when taken together, allowed for abortion on demand for all nine-months and for any reason.

On June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court reversed Roe, ruling there is “no right to abortion” in the U.S. Constitution. Our goal now is to have our South Carolina General Assembly restore legal protection to the unborn members of our human family at all stages of development.

Through the legal and peaceful means of education and legislation, South Carolina Citizens for Life works to save every unborn child until our General Assembly restores legal protection to the unborn at every stage of their human development. Over the years our efforts have saved more than 200,000 babies’ lives.

Each year we have two major education events: the Proudly Pro-Life Weekend in January that includes the Proudly Pro-Life Dinner and the annual Stand Up for Life March and Rally. The first March for Life in South Carolina was held in January 1974 and every year thereafter regardless of weather.

The second major educational event is the Pro-Life Booth at the State Fair that runs for 11 days and reaches up to a half-million Fair attendees. The University of South Carolina Students for Life established the Pro-Life Booth at the State Fair, in October of 1974. The Pro-Life Booth with the original medically accurate fetal models has been a hit exhibit at the Fair every year since. The Pro-Life Booth demonstrates the beauty of human life before birth.

In the mid-1980s, SCCL began working for passage of legislation to protect unborn children, their mothers, and the medically vulnerable members of our human family.

In 1990, SCCL worked successfully to pass the Parental Consent Act that stopped the abortion industry from performing abortions on underage girls without the consent of one parent, grandparent, or court-appointed guardian. Abortions declined by 16 percent, saving 1,595 babies’ lives the next year.

From 1994 to 2021 SCCL was instrumental in successfully lobbying the South Carolina General Assembly to pass life-saving law that were allowed under Roe v Wade. These include the

Women’s Right to Know Act (informed consent).
Abortion Clinic Regulation Act (putting all but three abortion facilities in SC out of business).
Physician-Assisted Suicide Ban Act outlawing doctor-prescribed euthanasia.
Safe Haven for Abandoned Newborns Act (also known as Daniel’s Law);
Autumn’s Law (denies convicted rapists parental rights over a child conceived as a result of criminal sexual violence).
Unborn Victims of Violence Act recognizes an unborn child at any stage of development as a separate victim of a criminal violence against the mother.
Choose Life SC vehicle tag with proceeds donated to pregnancy care centers.
Ultrasound Act. The abortionist must inform the pregnant woman she has the right to see the ultrasound of her unborn baby.
24-Hour Waiting Period (before an abortion) Act. After a woman receives information about complications of abortion and alternatives to abortion such as adoption or parenting, the woman has 24 hours to study the information.
Born Alive Infant Protection Act says a baby who is born alive cannot be deliberately killed.
Opt Out of Abortion in Obama Care Act. South Carolina does not pay for abortion under the “Affordable Health Care Act” aka Obama Care.
Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (stops abortion on demand at 20-weeks after fertilization when a child can feel pain.
Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act prohibits abortion after the fetal heartbeat can be detected (approximately six weeks). This law is currently tied up in the South Carolina Supreme Court. Planned Parenthood sued the State of South Carolina based on the abortion industry’s argument that the Fetal Heartbeat Act violates the State Constitution’s Right to Privacy clause.
