Crowd packs State House lawn for Stand Up for Life rally

Though scheduled long in advance, the rally came days after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the state’s law banning abortions after approximately six weeks of pregnancy. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, one of the speakers at Saturday’s rally, said the ruling is only a temporary setback for those opposed to the right to abortion.

“I'll make a promise, a pledge to you. This week was not the end. It was a speed bump, folks, that's all it was. And, and by looking at the crowd out here today, as you go back, as you go back to your respective communities around the state of South Carolina, you take this message back. We're not finished, we're not done. We're not through. We're not gonna stop until we protect the unborn,” Wilson said.

Also on hand to speak to the crowd was South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette. She expressed excitement at the size of the crowd, which she said was the biggest she had seen in the last four years.

“My heart is overjoyed with the amount of young people that I see here today. For all of you that are parents, you know that sometimes we do not know everything in our children's eyes, right? But they will believe their peers. And when their peers go to them for the truth, when their peers tell them the message, the correct message, we will continue to change hearts. We will continue to save lives,” she said.” The governor and I rolled out an executive budget yesterday, and I'm proud to say that this is the sixth year in a row there will be a proviso that no taxpayer dollars will fund any clinic that performs abortions here in South Carolina. The governor and I will continue to work with our General Assembly. We'll continue to work with our great attorney general to make sure that we fix this speed bump that occurred this week.”

Proudly Pro-Life Weekend also included a dinner at Seawell’s Friday night with keynote speaker Ryan Bomberger, cofounder of the Radiance Foundation and author of the book Not Equal: Civil Rights Gone Wrong. Bomberger also spoke at Saturday’s rally.

A South Carolina Student Life Summit, also part of the weekend, was scheduled to follow the rally.

South Carolina Citizens for Life, a state affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee, is “a non-profit, single issue, right-to-life organization devoted to restoring legal protection to the unborn and to protecting innocent human life by eliminating abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia from our society,” according to the organization’s website.
