Senators voting against the Heartbeat Bill were:
Bradley "Brad" Hutto
Floyd Nicholson
John Scott
Kevin Johnson
Marlon Kimpson
Margie Bright Matthews
Representative John McCravy, the bill's chief sponsor in the South Carolina House of Representatives, said, "The vote today represents the next to the last hurdle for the bill to overcome. The people in this state have reacted with disgust at the New York General Assembly and the Virginia Governor who call the demise of children after they are born." Last April, the bill passed the House by a
vote of 70-30.
Joe Mack, senior policy advisor for South Carolina Citizens for Life and the South Carolina Baptist Convention praised the pro-life senators for their vote. Today, he said, was a "great day for saving babies in South Carolina." The bill will be up for consideration when the Senators return for work in January.
Michael Acquilano, a spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, also praised passage of the legislation. "The Church stands with the vulnerable," he said, "and is pleased with this legislation focused on protecting unborn children."
The Heartbeat Bill is strongly supported by South Carolina Citizens for Life, Palmetto Family Council, the Catholic Diocese of Charleston, the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the South Carolina Association of Pregnancy Care Centers, North Greenville University World View, and the Palmetto Conservative Alliance.
