National Right to Life Praises CARES Act and
Praises State Affiliates Leading the Way in Asking that State and Federal Directives Are Applied to Abortion Facilities

 

Today, President Trump signed the CARES Act. The CARES Act prevents the stimulus money from paying for abortion on demand by applying the long-standing Hyde Amendment. In addition, the CARES Act ensures that Planned Parenthood will not have access to forgivable loan money meant for small businesses. We praise the President and pro-life members of Congress for working to ensure that federal laws are followed and funds will not be used to prop up the abortion industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

“We praise President Trump and pro-life leaders for ensuring that the CARES Act follows federal law,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Federal dollars should not be used to supplement an industry that takes in billions of dollars every year by taking the lives of innocent unborn babies.”

 

As the Congress and the President work to protect citizens from the physical and financial impact of COVID-19, pro-abortion groups and their allies are calling for more access to abortion. Despite the calls on the federal and state level to halt all elective surgeries so medical care can be focused on those in immediate need, the abortion industry has ignored these calls to close facilities and is continuing to pursue the destruction of unborn babies.

 

National Right to Life state affiliates have spearheaded efforts in urging state governors to close abortion clinics as non-essential medical services. Closing facilities would also free those medical supplies for use during the Coronavirus crisis.

 

“While millions of Americans are practicing social distancing and thousands are hospitalized with Coronavirus, abortion clinics are conducting business as usual,” said Jennifer Popik, J.D., legislative director of National Right to Life. “It is shameful that hospitals are struggling to provide care and find supplies while abortion clinics are utilizing supplies and putting both staff and clients at risk for exposure to the Coronavirus.”

 

“NRLC Affiliates are leading efforts nationwide to see that abortion clinics comply with directives to cease non-essential services, including in the states of Kentucky, Ohio, Texas, Maryland, Minnesota, Louisiana, Tennessee, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and North Carolina,” said Ingrid Duran, National Right to Life's director of State Legislation.
