President Trump and Vice President Pence Have Made the Right to Life “A Cornerstone Issue of Their Administration”
Promises Made, Promises Kept
WASHINGTON — As day two opens on the Republican National Convention, the speaker line-up will once again feature voices showing that President Trump and Vice President Pence have taken a firm stand for life which has shaped their administration and their campaign for re-election.
On Monday night, several convention speakers highlighted the dangers facing the most vulnerable in our society. Noting the extremism of the Democratic Party, Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, decried the abortion-until-birth policies of the party and its candidates, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. And Natalie Harp, a cancer survivor, reminded us how pervasive the culture of death is in our society. She spoke
of her experience as a cancer patient, saying, “I was told I was a burden to my family and to my country.” She spoke of the insidious “duty to die” philosophy promulgated by assisted suicide advocates saying that “right to die” was the “politically correct way of saying assisted suicide.”
Ambassador Nikki Haley reminded viewers that, “We are striving to reach a brighter future...where every believer can worship without fear and every life is protected.”
“President Trump and Vice President Pence have made the right to life a cornerstone issue of their administration,” said Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee. “From Mexico City Policy to protecting conscience rights of health care workers, President Trump and Vice President Pence have made it clear that the right to life and freedom of conscience are fundamental American
values.”
In a January 2019 letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), President Trump responded to attempts by House Democrats to pass laws that would effectively strip pro-life protections in several areas of federal law and would force taxpayers to pay for abortions. President Trump wrote,
"As a previous President said, our Nation was founded on the belief that every human being has rights, dignity, and matchless value. Every child should be welcomed into life and protected in law. The advancement of science and medicine does not, and need never conflict with the ethical imperative to cherish and protect every life. In fact, advances in science have made it more possible than ever to
see life developing at the earliest stages and underscore Americans’ obligation to protect helpless and innocent life from destruction—whether it is in the womb or elsewhere. These issues are deeply emotional and are made even more complicated when the Congress compels American taxpayers to fund efforts that end human life.
"…It is alarming that the House of Representatives, in its short time under Democrat control this year, has already sought to reverse important pro-life protections…I believe it is the most basic duty of government to guard the innocent. With that in mind, I will veto any legislation that weakens current pro-life Federal policies and laws, or that encourages the destruction of innocent human life at any
stage."
“This dedication to the right to life set the tone for the first four years of the Trump Administration and will continue into the next four,” said Tobias. “We look forward to the day when all innocent human life is protected. The Trump Administration is working to help make that day a reality.”
