COLUMBIA, SC (Wednesday, January 27, 2021) By a 29-17 vote, the South Carolina Senate gave second reading to the Fetal Heartbeat Bill (S1) moving it closer to Senate passage and sending it to the House of Representatives.
The Fetal Heartbeat Bill still faces stiff obstacles and a promised filibuster by Democrats on third and final reading in the Senate on Thursday, January 28.
“We applaud the South Carolina Senate for a strong 29-17 vote to move the Fetal Heartbeat Bill to Third Reading,” South Carolina Citizens for Life President Lisa Van Riper said. “The South Carolina Senate has taken an important next step in restoring legal protection to unborn
children once the heartbeat is detected.”
The bill gives a pregnant woman the right to know her baby has a heartbeat and gives her the right to hear the heartbeat. The bill also protects most unborn children with a beating heart from death by abortion.
The Fetal Heartbeat Bill faces third reading where Democrats are threatening to filibuster. Mrs. Van Riper warned that, “Those who are opposed to protecting the heartbeat of our unborn children are calling senators to pressure them to oppose the bill on Third Reading. It is
crucial for pro-life constituents to call their senator and encourage him or her to Stand Strong for the Fetal Heartbeat Bill.” One Republican voted with the Senate’s 16 Democrats who opposed the bill.
